Like most of us, I have picked up a lot of traits from my parents.  My mother was very strict on what we ate.  No soda, No candy, No high sugar cereal, (wheat germ, ugh)  you get the picture.  She also made her own bean sprouts.  I have continued to do this all because of how I grew up and I am thankful!

Bean sprouts are so good for you!  Ounce for ounce, its one of the best foods for  vitamins, minerals, and anti oxidants. Its a real live food that only takes a few days to grow on your kitchen counter and all you need is water.  How can it get any better than that!.  You can buy many different types of sprouts.  They all have unique tastes and different nutrient content.  They make great additions to salads and sandwiches.  Here is a good  link from Healthline explaining the benefits of bean sprouts.  https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/raw-sprouts#section3

I have had good luck with Handy Pantry brand sprouts which I get through the mail.  https://www.trueleafmarket.com/collections/handy-pantry-new-home/intended-use_growing-supply

My favorite mix is the 5 part salad mix which constrains  alfalfa, radish, mung bean, lentil and broccoli bean sprouts.  This mix is very tasty and has a little bite in it with the radish.  I buy the large 5lb can and it will last me almost a year.  These seeds store for a long time if you keep them dry and sealed up.

There are many different ways to grow sprouts as you will see if you go on the handy pantry web site.  My favorite is the mason jar method.  I use a larger quart jar and this gives my family enough sprouts for about a week.  Below are directions on how to grow sprouts using the jar method.

  • Make sure your jar is clean!  You can use a quart jar or larger 2 quart jar depending on how many sprouts you want.  I use the 2 quart jar.
  • Place seeds in the jar.  Directions on your kit will tell you to use anywhere from a table spoon of seeds to 1/4 cup depending on how big of a jar you have.
  • Soak seeds overnight.  Just make sure they are covered with water.
  • Drain seeds the next morning.  Your jar will come with a screw on lid that is a mesh screen.  After you drain the first time, then rinse and drain again.
  • Rinse again at night, then turn jar over and drain until morning.
  • Repeat the rinsing and draining for 4-5 days and watch your seeds grow.
  • Make sure sprouts drain well!  They should be almost dry by the time you rinse again.

I store my sprouts in a zip lock bag with paper towel in it to absorb any water.  They will keep in the refrigerator for a good week.  My family LOVES them.

This is a great way to get good nutrition.  Start growing bean sprouts now!!
